Topic: New Site Series: Part 3: Online Desktop Posted: April 01 2010 at 10:33am |
As the days lead up to the new site's release, I have decided to
release a series of threads that will, each, describe something new
about the site. Feel free to comment, ask questions, or even share your
opinions of the new feature. By reading each of the series you can be
prepared in knowing what new features are in store for you. Some
features may impact the way you behave or influence your present
decisions.
Part 3 of the New Site Series
gMaker.org Online Desktop (GMOOD)
I have been working on this system for over five years, and it is finally complete! I am pleased to introduce...
That once the new site is released, you will be able to access your own online desktop from any computer in the world. This desktop platform is ran through a vast network of cloud computers and will provide each member of the new site with over 100 GB of personal storage space. The gMaker.org Online Desktop, or GMOOD, is already in its alpha stages and will be ready to go at the launch of the new site.
GMOOD works by streaming the visual capture of the screen to your browser every 0.1 seconds. This is frame rate is faster than most computers from the early 90's. You will not notice the slow frame rate if you have a higher speed internet connection.
Since GMOOD does not actually run on your computer, all you need is a browser that has Flash and Java installed, you no longer have to waste money on expensive computer hardware. All your storage space, RAM, and applications will be stored within the GMOOD cloud.
The operating system features include:
- Powerful range of operating system emulations:
- DOS based operating system so you may install all those old school games and play them directly through your browser.
- Windows Vista emulation package so you may experience the latest and greatest Windows experience. (Okay I was working on this before Windows 7 came out, so lets pretend Vista is the best!)
- Mac OS operating system emulation, so you may feel good that you have over priced software running on your GMOOD.
- The Gmaker Operating system: allowing you to quickly and easily view the gmaker.org website with virtually NO loading times.
The GMOOD system is ran through a cloud of over four dozen servers. This allows each member of the site to have their very own GMOOD with the following stats: - 1 GB ram per GMOOD
- 100 GB space per GMOOD
- 512 MB virtual Video ram
- 2mbps dedicated internet connection
Since GMOOD is ran in a single physical location, I was able to purchase a single site license that allows several instances of the same application to be installed at no additional cost. This allows the following software to be provided to everyone at no additional cost as long as it is ran through the GMOOD system. - Site licensed installed applications (free to you):
- Photoshop 7 (sorry I couldn't get the license of anything newer).
- Flash 5
- Front Page 2003
- Microsoft Paint
- Note Pad
- Open Office Suite
- RPG Maker 2000 and 2003 (not in english)
- RPG Maker XP and VX
- Game Maker
- Visual Studio 2003
- AOL Instant Messenger
Also, through the site license abilities of having a single physical location, I was able to buy very cheap licenses for the following games. Since the GMOOD does not support true 3D, there are no 3D games available. - Fantastic Pre-installed games include (free to you):
- Doom II
- Ms Pac Man
- Warcraft 2: Tide of Darkness
- Sim City 2000
- Starcraft
- The Sims: all expansions
- Tetris
- Grand Theft Auto 2
- Sonic Adventures
To add on top of the great commerical games available for free, covered by a group site license, I have also found a legal loop hole allowing GBA emulation! Since the GMOOD is considered a "private personal computer" there is no legal penalties if you have illegal software on it. - GBA Emulation, including the following games:
- Pokemon Red
- Super Mario Land
- Zelda: Link to the Past
- Metroid Fusion
- Barbie Beach Adventure
- Cooking Mama
In order to support such a complex, advance system, GMOOD will not let you set your own desktop background, but instead will constantly have a grid of banner advertisements displayed on your desktop. If you keep too many windows open at full screen, then random pop up advertisements will appear every 3 and a half minutes. These pop ups cannot be closed, but will appear at the top of the screen out of the way, so you can still enjoy the remaining portion of the GMOOD screen. The GMOOD system is the first of its kind, and will be the basis of a new internet revolution. Screen shot of unlocked, banner free GMOOD version:

Ooo, I see Mario! Also I'm not surprised about Photoshop, but atleast you got a photoshop on there :D
This sound really cool, I just can't wait to see how it turns out. I'm sure Google Chrome would run it, I just love this browser, I dispise of IE. ><
Anyway it sounds really complex, Did you make it from scratch? Or was it made and you had to install and edit it? Either way sounds great =D

I have worked on it for the past five years, but not all of it is my code. I have taken libraries from several systems. Including Windows 95, Microsoft DOS, an old version of a Mac OS, and of course, I did not program any of the applications that are pre-installed.
I still have to buy the hardware and servers for this, but I have arranged a good deal for one year with my data host in Dallas Texas. This will make the servers cost very little until the banner ads start to kick in and take over providing complete revenue for the long run.
It appears that the system works in all browsers. I have not tested Chrome yet.

Looks nice. The feautres and the ability to play older games attract me very much.
As for the screenshot. I like it. Though only the gap in the taskbar where the Windows Icon used to be and probablt also time/date. It's so empty now.

This looks sick but I can't seem to grasp what it is exactly, because the screenshot threw me off XD
So basically it's like a virtual computer that we can use with pre-installed applications?

Alright- so yes this was a April Fool's prank/lie. This is not going to happen. This is clearly over the top and too many features, way too expensive, and not practical.
Thanks for playing along. Happy April Fools!

actually thought there could be a cool new feature. I kinda gathered it
was fake though as I noticed the april fools thread before, but still,
I prefer funny ones.

Oh my god, I read everything about GMOOD... ...and I was FOOLED! I was going to reply to this on April 1st, but was dragged off the computer by my siblings(and disappeared from that day until today). I always had that feeling that it was too good to be true...

Anyone who actually wants something like this- just needs to take a moment with their web browser closed, or at the very least minimized and learn respect for your own desktop and computer.
